These books are the best bet for the beginner to amass a lot of knowledge in a short time.  The Rubber Powered Model Airplanes book will start you out with simple beginner models that fly great.  Once you have learned some construction techniques, you can use the book to help you learn to fly them.  It is a short step from the simple models to the more complex ones you will see flying at club events.
