Bill Kuhl's Article on the History of Wright Stuff

Hello, this is the web page for the Thermal Thumbers of Metro Atlanta, AMA club number 1834. We are the area's only freeflight club. If you think you might like to try this, give us a call. Beginners are welcome and we can introduce you to a great hobby!

We fly freeflight models. They do not have radios in them so they are on their own once they are launched. This means the kits are inexpensive to purchase and because they are so light, fly really well. This is a rare situation in aviation- a cheap airplane that flies well is not common at all!  The models are usually adjusted on the ground to fly in a pattern so that the modeler can keep it in sight until it comes down. We can show you how to do that.

We fly these freeflight models in contests and just for fun. Since life is too short to spend all your time doing boring things, come join us and have some fun in a unique hobby.  Our contests are usually flown for duration; the plane that stays up the longest time wins. We are easily recognized on the field as we are the guys with the stop watches around our necks looking up into the sky!  We fly everything from small gliders to very large rubber powered models.   You may find it interesting that under current rules, large rubber powered models have the greatest performance of any freeflight models, even the gas powered ones. Other types of powered models flown include gas, electric , Co2, and compressed air.

During the late fall and winter months, we fly freeflight models at a school gymnasium. Typically, these models are much smaller and lighter than the outdoor types because they do not have to handle the stresses of the wind. Some of the more advanced indoor types can not be flown outside at all, as they would be ripped apart by the gentlest breeze. These planes offer spectacular performance and have flown in our small gym for over 13 minutes. Models like this at a site with a high ceiling can easily fly for over 25 minutes and a number of experts have flown for more than 40 minutes. As a beginner, achieving this level of performance will be difficult initially as it involves delicate building techniques that would be tricky for a beginner. However, there are many types of small indoor aircraft that are easily constructed by tyros or even children that are capable of flights over one minute. If that does not seem like a long flight, stop right now and look at your watch for one minute. I can assure you that if you build and fly a model that flies around the gym for a minute you will be thrilled. The effect it has on children is amazing! We can show you how to do this, and get you started.

If you have been out of modeling for a while, or are bored with RC flying, give freeflight a try. You will find it very enjoyable and a completely different challenge from RC flying. Lots cheaper, too!

If you think you would like to learn more about this fine hobby, or observe a contest, give us a call. Or you can e-mail us at one of the addresses below
